Pivot your Career into Federal Construction

As someone who spends much of their life focused on the built environment, having pride in the finished product of your work and projects undertaken is huge. When you walk the piers of our Nations Shipyards, and look up at the bow of an aircraft carrier, you can’t help but feel the scale of our nations defense infrastructure and the depth of the mission. Working as a construction professional in the defense industry also has highly competitive pay, job security, and opportunities to work anywhere in the world. Read on for a few tips to get started:

This guide will take you through the initial steps of focusing your career toward Federal construction and landing your first gig on a contract.

STEP 1: First off, you’re going to need a USACE Construction Quality Management (CQM) Certification. One of the best place to take this right now is through AGC San Diego’s online course at this link.

STEP 2: The next big one is going to be an OSHA 30 certification, these are offered through several providers and can be completed online. A CPR/First Aid card is also a common requirement and easy to obtain.

STEP 3: Register on GovGig’s website. This way employers can find your profile and hire you for their next project.

STEP 4: Get involved with the Military community. Take a shift volunteering at your local Veterans Center. Read up on news surrounding local military installations. Get something military related on your resume as soon as possible.

Once you get in, absorb as much as you can in the first few years. The Department of Defense is the nations oldest and largest government agency. It is intimidating by design. But with some resilience, you will have the opportunity to work on extremely interesting projects and forge a meaningful career. At Watermark, we work with candidates to help them achieve their short term and long term goals. Welcome to the community.
